A 16-year-old Palestinian boy, shown in a photo that has been roundly condemned as symbolising the Israeli army’s use of excessive force, has been accused of throwing stones at a group of armed Israeli soldiers.

An image of Fawzi al-Junaidi, blindfolded and surrounded by more than 20 Israeli occupation forces, was widely denounced as it was shared on social media earlier this week.

The scene pictures al-Junaidi looking disoriented, wearing a grey shirt and ripped jeans as dozens of soldiers crowd around him carrying guns and wearing protective gear, including helmets and knee pads.

The teenager, who denies throwing stones, was arrested on Thursday amid ongoing

protests across the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip over a US decision on December 6 to recognise

Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

In six days, at least 16 other Palestinians have been arrested for protesting. At least four have been killed in the violence since the US declaration, and more than 700 injured.

‘He was beaten with a rifle’

Al-Junaidi also denies accusations of “participating in protests”.

Witnesses have claimed they saw al-Junaidi throwing stones.

“He said he was fearful and was running away when tear gas canisters were being thrown,” his lawyer, Farah Bayadsi, told Al Jazeera. “Fawzi said he was beaten with a rifle and he showed up with bruises all over his neck, chest and back.”

She said that the child would face formal charges in front of an Israeli military court on Wednesday, following an initial hearing on Monday.

“The police had called for an extension on Fawzi’s arrest during the initial hearing,” said Bayadsi, who works under the Defence for Children International – Palestine (DCIP).

“The prosecutor demanded a seven-day extension to the arrest so that they can prepare a list of indictments, but we refused. The list of formal charges will be announced [Wednesday] at the second hearing,” she said.

According to Bayadsi, the judge was stunned at the excessive force that al-Junaidi was subjected to – most apparent in the manner in which he was transferred to prison.

“He showed up with large slippers from the prison. He had lost his shoes and spoke about the way he was abused while being transferred to prison,” she said.

“The prosecutors didn’t even say whether the soldiers would be investigated for using excessive force. The whole case so far has been handled with neglect.”

Though unlikely, Bayadsi said the defence team would try to secure al-Junaidi’s release while his case is ongoing.

“It would be easier to speak with him [and] other witnesses, and to gather more evidence,” she said.

‘He was not protesting’

Due to his father’s leg injury and his mother’s terminal illness, al-Junaidi had been the main provider for his family of nine.

His uncle Rashad said that he was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.

“He left his house to buy some groceries. Unfortunately, as he was looking for the store, he bumped into a military ambush and was confronted with Israeli forces.

“They beat him, blindfolded him, arrested him, and first took him to the detention centre in a nearby settlement. That night, at 2am, he was transferred another detention centre,” he told Al Jazeera.

“The day after, they took him to Ofer prison.”

Ofer is in Israel and mostly holds administrative detainees. The prison rarely grants prisoners with visitation rights, and families are often denied permits to cross over to Israel altogether.

“He was not protesting or anything”, Rashad said. “Unfortunately, there has been absolutely no form of communication – we haven’t spoken to him since his arrest.”

Administrative detention is a practice in which Israel imprisons Palestinians without charge or trial, often based on “secret evidence”.

More than 300 children detained in Israeli prisons

Ayed Abu Qtaish, DCIP’s accountability programme director, said about 320 children are currently held in Israeli prisons and detention centres.

“In October 2015, there was a spike in the number of children being interrogated and arrested … A lot of them end up being tried in military courts,” he said.

“These children are usually picked up at protests, arrested for throwing stones, for allegedly possessing a weapon, things like that,” he explained.

Arrests of children usually happen at friction points – either near settlements, bypass roads, or at a construction site neat the separation barrier, he said.

“During these arrests, the children undergo various types of mistreatment, including torture,” he said.

The southern West Bank city of Hebron has become the site of several Israeli settlements in the middle of the local Palestinian population.

According to Israeli rights group B’Tselem, Palestinians in Hebron have been subject to restrictions on movement, the closure of main streets, and the shutting down of a major commercial hub.

B’Tselem has documented Palestinians’ experiences of lengthy, humiliating inspections at 20 permanent checkpoints across Hebron.

The presence of Israeli soldiers has led to a cycle of confrontation, often resulting in nightly military raids and arrests.

‘The infamous breaking the bones policy is back’

Amjad Al-Najjar, spokesperson for the Hebron-based Palestinian Prisoners Club, told Al Jazeera that since the last wave of protests, Israeli forces have used excessive force when beating and arresting Palestinians.

“The infamous breaking the bones policy is back,” he said, referencing policy by Israel’s former Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin.

When he was defence minister

during the first Intifada – or mass uprising, Rabin ordered Israeli army commanders to break the bones of Palestinian protesters.

Today, this policy has evolved to specifically target the knees and legs of Palestinian youth to disable them and as a means to prevent them from protesting altogether.

“In the last few days, after the protests over the US embassy move, a lot of the youth who return home after being detained were in miserable shape,” said Al-Najjar.

“They’re often covered in blood and with stitches on their heads as a result of being severely abused and beaten up by Israeli forces,” he added.

“They’re often in so much pain, that they are unable to consume water and food.”

International politics: Trump on Jones win: A hard fought victory

Trump on Jones win: A hard fought victory

Trump went all in for Moore in the late stages of this race. His appearance last Friday in Pensacola was a wink, wink, nudge, nudge way to rally Republican support for the flagging Republican nominee. Trump recorded a robocall for Moore, sent out a series of tweets about the race and generally worked in the final week of the campaign to make this a referendum on himself.

It didn’t work. Turnout in rural counties in Alabama didn’t match the booming numbers in the Democratic enclaves of the state. (More on that later.) In a state where Trump won massively just more than a year ago, his approval rating was a so-so 48% approve and 48% disapprove, according to exit polls.

There’s no doubt that Trump’s involvement on Moore’s behalf — against the wishes of a large chunk of the Senate Republicans — was largely driven by a belief that the two men were kindred spirits. Both, in Trump’s mind, faced unfair sexual allegations. Both made a career out of fighting the GOP establishment. Both were warriors against political correctness.

But, Roy Moore, the Donald Trump of Alabama, lost on Tuesday night. And that means Donald Trump lost too.

What it doesn’t mean is that Trump will moderate his behavior in any meaningful way. Usually, when faced with a loss, Trump doubles down and insists that somehow, someway he won. This is not a man who will admit defeat even when it’s staring him in the face as it is in Alabama.

Kidnappers who refused to release Doctor after collecting N8m arrested five months after Shock and outrage greeted the abduction of a medical doctor and consultant ophthalmologist, Dr. Alex Atama-Pepple, on July, 15, 2017.

Atama-Pepple, working with Braithwaite Memorial Hospital, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, was abducted on July 15, 2017, while returning from Port Harcourt Golf Club, located at Old GRA, Rivers State.

This golf club is patronized by the rich and influential people in the state. The abduction of Atama-Pepple was alleged to have caused fear among members of the club.

The abduction of Atama-Pepple was made possible by Collins Nkue, a worker with Port Harcourt Golf Club. According to detectives, it was Nkue that invited the kidnappers to abduct Atama-Pepple. He also assisted the kidnappers to monitor the movement of the victim until his abduction.

Seven among the suspected kidnappers were arrested at Port Harcourt, Rivers State in connection with the abduction. The gang was smashed almost five months after police launched a manhunt for the members.

Those arrested are Alali Godday, aka Pompo; Igbalatee Lawson, alias, Agbami; Da-Obufia Isokoariari, aka J-boy; Samuel Monima Princewill, alias Gboko; Nobo NgiaNgia; Chibuzor Anudo, aka Dada; Victor Frank; Victor Anoro; and Samuel.

The suspects were arrested by detectives attached to the Inspector-General of Police Special Intelligence Response Team, led by Assistant Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari.

The police said: “Collins Nkue has been working in that golf club for over six years as a driver. He is the informant that brought the kidnapping job to the other suspects. He was also the person who monitored the movement of the victim until his eventual abduction.

“On the day of the abduction, Nkue sent the doctor’s vehicle’s plate number, brand of vehicle and colour to the kidnappers. He also sent the colour of the victim’s fez-cap. He alerted the gang when the doctor was leaving the club. They trailed him to a store at Ogbunabali area of Port-Harcourt, where he stopped to do some shopping.

“A member of the gang, Da-Obufia Isokoariari, aka J-Boy, armed with an Ak-47 rifle on that fateful day, wore a face mask. Isokoariari was the first person that jumped down from their car and attempted to attack the doctor. He, however, fell into a gutter. Another member, Alali Godday, aka Pompo, immediately came down with his Ak-47 rifle and shot twice into the air to create fear. The leader of the gang, Igbalatee Lawson, alias Agbami, who was also masked, came down with his own rifle. They kidnapped the doctor and dragged him into their waiting Toyota Spider saloon car.”

The gang members blindfolded the doctor. They drove to Okwele Waterside in Diobu-Mile 1 area of Port Harcourt, where they had a waiting speed boat. The boat was manned by Samuel Monima Princewill, aka Gboko and Nobo NgiaNgia.

Atama-Pepple was taken into a creek in Buguma Town and held for nine days in the creek. The creek belongs to Agbami. The gang demanded for N50 million ransom.

On July 20, 2017, around 9pm, Agbami and three other members of his gang, including Chibuzor Anudo, alias Dada, went to Emenike Street at Mile 1, Diobu and collected a ransom of N8 million in a carton. The money was paid by the younger brother of the doctor.

Immediately they collected the N8 million ransom, the gang looked for a hotel and lodged. They later shared the money in the hotel, but still refused to release Atama-Pepple.

A new round of negotiations was established between Atama-Pepple’s relatives and the second in command of the group, Godday. The gang demanded for an additional ransom of N1.5 million, which was paid before the doctor was released.

The police said: “When we were deployed by the IGP to commence investigation into the incident, we discovered that the kidnappers spent a month planning the operation. They all took an oath at a native doctor’s house at Elehi Beach, Mile 1. The name of charm is ‘Ogoni wonders.’ They swore that no one would betray the gang. The native doctor assured them that after they used the charms, no policeman would ever be able to arrest them.”

Relating why he went into crime, Agbami 28, confessed that the destruction of his goods by some naval officers pushed him into kidnapping.

Agbami, who graduated in 2008, explained that he started playing football after graduation. At a point, he thought he would make a career in football, but he later changed his mind and walked away from that dream.

After abandoning his budding football career, he went into commercial motorcycle riding and from there, into oil bunkering.

He said: “When I made enough money, I set up my own illegal refinery, where I refined crude oil into diesel. After my first operation, I was about supplying over 350 drums of refined AGO to some of my customers when naval men accosted me. They demanded for N250, 000 bribe. When I couldn’t give them, they set my product on fire. The boat, which I used in conveying the products wasn’t mine. After that destruction, I ran into debts. People I owed started disturbing me.

“All the AK-47 rifles that policemen found with me, belonged to a guy known as Iminabo Isokra, who was a militant and politician. He was beheaded during the last election crisis. Before he was killed, I was with him when he buried his guns in the forest. I heard he was killed by Kalampo, Sunny and Adaya, who were all supporters of All Progressives Congress.

“I ran out of the community during that election. When I came back, I didn’t know who told those APC boys that I was back; they came looking for me. They shot indiscriminately when they got to my house. One of my uncles was shot. I felt embarrassed; I headed to the spot where Iminabo buried his rifles and pistol. I dug them out. After a while, those boys came to look for me again. When they came, we exchanged gun fire. One of them was killed, while the rest escaped. When the town became settled, we burnt the body.”

Agbami explained that it was Godday, who called and initiated him into kidnapping. Goddady told him that he would send Isokoariari to Agbami, so that they would both look for a victim to abduct. Godday told him that kidnapping was the easiest way of raking in huge sums of money without sweating too much.

Agbami noted: “They told me that the man who brought the job, has a brother, who is an herbalist. This herbalist would clear the way for us spiritually and physically. Godday said that he had arranged two Ak-47 rifles for the operation. He also asked me to support them with more rifles. I met Godday in Port Harcourt, and after our conversation, we and four others, including Collins who brought the job, went to the herbalist’s house in Port Harcourt.

“We took an oath where the herbalist assured us that we would be successful. Godday was the person who brought the vehicle for the operation. We were four that went for that operation. We succeeded in kidnapping the man. I got N1 million in that operation, J-Boy got N700,000, Godday N1 million, Tina, who also made a call during the negotiation collected N450, 000. Usher, who was also at the bush collected N150,000. I gave Nobo N250,000 and Obereye N150,000. We gave Collins and herbalist N800,000 because they are brothers. We gave seven other people, who came to the camp N50,000 each. On our way to the camp, where we would release the victim, my boat rider, Nobo’s assistant and I were arrested by men of the marine police. They found a locally made gun on us and our share of the ransom. We were taken into custody. I didn’t confess to the marine police that the money was proceed of kidnapping. I also didn’t know that Godday and J-Boy went back to camp and started a new negotiation with the victim’s family.”

Isokoariari 24, fondly called J-Boy by his gang members, said his world crumpled after his father died. He had to drop out of school. After dropping out of school, he tried his hands on fashion designing, then modelling.

Isokoariari said: “I couldn’t go to the university after my father died. My mother was very sick; she had been bedridden for close to six years now. My problem started late last year when one of my friends, Godday, stole a car and gave it to me to keep. When he was arrested by the police, he brought policemen to my house in order to retrieve the car. Police took me along with the car. We were both charged to court. We were granted bail, but Godday first perfected his bail condition. His family had money. I ended up spending six months in prison. I was released on March 30, 2017.”

When he was released, his family members felt that a change of scene was necessary. They convinced him to relocate to Imo State, he accepted. On July 2017, Isokoariari moved to Imo State.

He later returned to Port Harcourt, but refused to disclose why he came back. It was after his return that he met Godday (Pompo), who sold the idea of kidnapping people to him.

Isokoariari said: “Godday made it clear to me that all he wanted from me was to connect him to Agbami, my brother. He said he knew Agbami had a speed boat, a camp in the creek and some rifles. He said that if Agnami gave us his support, the operation would be successful. He told me that our target was very rich, and that the rich man would pay us N4million. I managed to convince Agbami about the operation. We had a meeting with Godday; we also met Collins, who took us to the place where we would find our target. We also met Collin’s bother, who is an herbalist. The herbalist made us to take an oath not to betray one another.”

A week after the gang members took the oath, they abducted Atama-Pepple. They ferried him straight him to Agbami’s camp, which was inside the creek.

Isokoariari recounted: “I took the man’s ATM card and his Personal Identification Number (PIN). Godday and I went to a boutique at Rumuola Port Harcourt and bought clothes worth over N50,000. We also called one of Godday boys to go to Education Bus Stop at Mile 1. Godday called one of his boys, Starboy and gave him the ATM code. Godday asked him to withdraw all the money in the account. Starboy returned with N70,000. Godday gave me N10,000. He told me that he would take N10,000 and send the rest to the camp for the feeding of the man.

Isokoariari said: “I don’t know if he gave the money to Agbami because I didn’t go back to the creek until I was called and informed that the ransom has been paid. Agbaimi called and asked me to meet him in a hotel. When I got there, I saw several other gang members. I was given N700,000 as my share. I bought a television set with part of the money. We collected an additional N1.5 million from the man’s family because Agbaimi short paid us. When we heard that he had been arrested, Godday and I quickly put up a call to the man’s relative and asked them to pay us an additional money so that we would release the man.

“We threatened his brother and lied to him that those in the camp with his brother, were different from those that he paid the N8 million ransom. The brother must have got sacred because we called them with a different number.  I know I have committed a crime, especially since this is not my first time. But my happiness is that I have given my life to Christ. Ratty and Engineer brought the two guns we used for the operation. Ratty didn’t follow us to the operation.”

Another suspect, Chibuzor Amobi, a taxi driver, claimed that Godday tricked him into crime. He said that he got to know Godday at his park at Education bus stop, along Ikwere road, where he also sells transport union tickets.

Amobi said: “There was a day I went to that bus stop and Starboy, who is one of Godday’s boys called and said I should come. He said that he wanted me to take his boss somewhere. I took Godday to his destination, and we exchanged phone numbers. He promised to call me.  Few days later, Godday called me; he said that he wanted me to take him to Buguma. He took N10,000 from me and then called again, asking me to come to Buguma to take him back to Port Harcourt. On the day the doctor was kidnapped, he called me to come for my money, he then deceived and took me to the kidnap operation. He also used my phone number to demand additional ransom from the doctor’s family. I was the first person that was arrested by the police.”

Sports: UEFA Champions league

The Ligue 1 side unsusprisingly drifted in the betting following their draw against the European champions while Pep Guardiola’s men will face Basel

The draw for the first knockout round of the Champions League has been made at UEFA headquarters in Nyon and each of the remaining 16 teams now know their opponents for the next stage.

Paris Saint-Germain were 7/2 (4.50) favourites with dabblebet before they were drawn against reigning champions Real Madrid. The Ligue 1 side were beaten by Bayern Munich in their final Group B game but still topped the pile and amassed a record breaking 25 goals in the process. PSG are now rated as 4/1 (5.0)chances with the same firm.

Cristiano Ronaldo is odds on to be the leading scorer in this year’s competition but Los Blancos could only finish second to Tottenham in their group, and as such the holders have a huge task on their hands against one of the most fancied sides in this season’s tournament.

Usually Real Madrid and Barcelona lead the betting at this stage, but the La Liga pair are available at 8/1 (9.0) and 13/2 (7.50) respectively after their tricky ties were decided.

Barcelona have a commanding lead domestically but will line up against Chelsea in the next round, certainly one of the strongest runner up sides they could have been draw against and they’ve held firm in the outright betting.

Manchester City (11/4 from 9/2) are the new market principles, with Pep Guardiola’s men now boasting an 11 point advantage in the Premier League and having been paired with Basel in the next round of this competition, the bookmakers expect them to be serious contenders after a kind draw under the stewardship of a man who already has two Champions League winners medals to his name as a manager.

Bayern Munich (9/2 from 7/1) drew Besiktas and have seen their odds cut accordingly, with Manchester United next at 14/1 (15.0), who will face Sevilla as they look to add another European crown to their trophy cabinet following last season’s victory in the Europa League.

There are five English teams in the last 16 of the Champions League and with four of them topping their respective groups, there should be plenty of optimism about a Premier League side troubling the usual suspects in the knockout rounds of this season’s competition.

Liverpool drew Porto and that has seen their outright price go from 18/1 to 12/1 (13.0) with dabblebet, one of the biggest moves of the day. Jurgen Klopp took Borussia Dortmund to the final in 2013 will be looking to go one better this time around with the Reds.

Tottenham drifted though, (25/1 from 14/1) despite some impressive performances in the group stages. With Mauricio Pochettino having already conceded the Premier League title to Manchester City, there are likely to be few doubts about Spurs’ priorities in the first half of 2018 but they’ll face Juventus, a formidable task considering the Italians have made the final twice in the past three years

Chelsea (25/1 from 22/1) were the only English team not to win their group. That gave them very few options in the last 16 because of the rule that no two teams from the same country can play each other at this stage and subsequently the Blues will take on Barcelona as they look to replicate their 2012 victory over Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena.

Sports: Zidane on club world cup

Los Blancos are keen to secure their third title of the season, having already claimed the UEFA Super Cup and Supercopa de Espana

Zinedine Zidane said Real Madrid want to add the Club World Cup to the trophy cabinet before fighting to retain their La Liga and Champions League crowns, emphasising his side won’t claim the title on reputation alone.

Two-time champions Madrid will face Emirati outfit Al Jazira in Wednesday’s semi-final at Zayed Sports City Stadium in Abu Dhabi.

And Madrid are keen to secure their third title of the season, having already claimed the UEFA Super Cup and Supercopa de Espana.
